A tale of the two wardrobes: Stories from seasonal depression!
We all have heard of people who are affected by short winter days and the depression they experience. The research into this area still seems sketchy and not fully understood. The efficacy of light therapy in lieu of lack of sunshine has been demonstrated. other adjustment and interventions however need further research. one of the most dramatic manifestation of the winter depression ( seasonal affective disorder) is fatigue, increased need for sleep and increased appetite. I have seen some patients who have to maintain completely different sizes of clothing for the winter wardrobe as they gain considerable weight between November and April. in addition to bright light therapy some of these interventions may be useful ;a. cognitive-behavioral therapy challenging faulty beliefs has been found surprisingly effective 2. increased exercise in a well lighted and populated area.3. out door activities( if you can stand the cold!) 4. altering traditional comfort foods with low fat, nutritious soups and stews 5. maintaining regular sleep wake cycle . 6. allowing intake of moderate caffeine not too close to the bedtime( my favorite, no wonder some of the best coffee house were started in seattle and Cleveland!) 7. If all fails and the symptoms of depression become severe enough, some antidepressant medications have proven quite effective provided they are closely monitored. good luck and have happy, sunny thoughts!
